Daily Cannabis Use Results In 50% Lower Odds Of Using Illicit Opioids Among Those With Chronic Pain

Daily cannabis use lowers the odds by 50% that a consumer will use illicit opioids among those with chronic pain, compared to those who do not use cannabis. However, those who reported occasional use of cannabis were no more or less likely than non-users to use illicit opioids on a daily basis.

During a first interview in which pain was reported, 50.6% (583 of 1,152) of participants were using cannabis either occasionally (n = 322) or daily (n = 261). Daily cannabis users were significantly more likely than occasional users to report a number of therapeutic uses of cannabis . . .
