Deaths Due To Drug Overdose & Alcohol Declining Unevenly Across Population Groups

The combined number of deaths from alcohol, drugs, and suicide in the United States declined in 2023 for the second straight year, according to an analysis of federal data by Trust for America’s Health. In 2023, 105,007 Americans died from drug overdoses, 47,938 died from alcohol-induced causes, and 49,316 died of suicide, according to the report.

There were 31.3 drug overdose deaths per 100,000 people in 2023; the mortality rate was 4% lower than the previous year’s rate.;
