During 2012 Through 2022, California ED Visits Increased For High Acuity Conditions, But The Proportion Admitted To Hospitalization Declined

In California, the percentage of emergency department (ED) visits considered “severe” or “critical” increased more between 2012 and 2022 than corresponding rates of hospital admissions from EDs. Severe ED visits rose by 34.8%, but the proportion resulting in hospital admission declined from 15.5% in 2012 to 8.1% in 2022. Critical visits increased by 75.8%, but the proportion resulting in a hospital admission decreased from 52.7% in 2012 to 37.5% in 2022.
