Federal Department Of Education Restricts Ohio Access To $32 Million Charter School Grant Funds
On November 4, 2015, the United States Department of Education informed the Ohio Department of Education that although the state received $32 million in funding through a Charter Schools Program (CSP) grant award for fiscal year 2015, the state could not access the funds without providing more information to answer federal questions. In July 2015, the Ohio Education Department official who wrote the state’s grant application resigned after it was discovered that the official had manipulated student performance statistics to favor charter schools. Ohio spends about $1 billion annually on charter schools with about 120,000 students.
