Federal Judge Issues Sweeping Remedial Order To Arizona Prison Officials For Medical, Mental Health Care
On January 9, 2023, U.S. District Judge Roslyn O. Silver issued a remedial ruling requiring the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry (ADCRR) to make "substantial" changes to staffing and conditions so that medical care and mental health care at Arizona prisons meet constitutional standards. The order comes after ADCRR failed to abide by a past settlement agreement and court orders, which resulted in an "unconstitutional substantial risk of serious harm" to people in Arizona’s custody. ACDRR also "knowingly created documents in a false or misleading manner" related to the lack of staffing and recordkeeping.
