Fewer than 19% of U.S. nursing homes are ranked “best” in “short-term rehabilitation,” “long-term care,” or both, according to a recent analysis of 14,750 skilled nursing homes by U.S. News & World Report.

The facilities earning the “best” designation shared the following characteristics:

Total staffing hours per resident per day were 20% higher than the national average.

Physical therapy hours per resident per day were 80% higher than the national average.

Hospitalizations for long-term residents were 15% lower than the national average.

Emergency department visits for those receiving rehabilitation services were 33% lower compared . . .
