Final Nursing Home Minimum Staffing Rule Released, Three-Stage Phase-In To Begin In May 2024
On April 22, 2024, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued its final nursing home staffing rule. The rule calls for a minimum of 3.48 hours per resident day (HPRD) of nursing staff time, including at least 0.55 HPRD for registered nurses (RNs) and 2.45 HPRD for certified nurse assistants (CNAs). The remaining 0.48 HPRD can be provided by any combination of combination of nurse staff, to include RNs, licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and licensed vocational nurses (LVN). Facilities are also required to have an RN onsite 24 hours per day.
