Florida Discourages Use Of Psychiatric Medications Among Children & Youth

Florida health officials released new guidance discouraging the use of psychiatric medications for children with anxiety, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and behavioral disorders. The guidance noted that the state Surgeon General recommends against the use of psychotropic drugs. To decrease psychotropic drug administration, the guidance recommended that prescribers conduct comprehensive evaluations and physical tests, and start psychotherapy, before prescribing medications.

The Florida Department of Health released its recommendations in Avoidance of Psychotropic Pharmacotherapy in Children Age 5-17: Guidance Statement. It called for prescribers to take the following steps:
