30% Of Massachusetts Opioid Overdose ER Survivors Later Received MAT
Among a group of nearly 18,000 adults in Massachusetts who had an emergency department visit between 2012 and 2014 due to a non-fatal opioid overdose, about 30% later received medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), which is more broadly called medication assisted treatment (MAT). The remainder received no MOUD following the overdose. During the 12 months after the overdose, 11% enrolled in methadone maintenance therapy for a median of five months; 17% received buprenorphine for a median of four months; and 6% received naltrexone for a median one month.
