Handheld Test Of Pupil Response To Light Identifies Children With Autism
An eye test to measure how a child’s pupils respond to light can detect differences between children with autism and typically developing children. In a proof-of-concept study with 60 children, 36 diagnosed with autism and 24 with typical development, researchers used an automated hand-held device to measure differences in pupil reflexes in response to light. Children with autism had differences in how long it took for their pupils to constrict in response to the light: their constriction time was faster, and their pupils were slower to return to original size after the light was removed.
