Senior Care & Hospital Bankruptcies Increased In 2025 While Other Health Care Sectors Declined
Bankruptcy filings among health care organizations with more than $10 million in liabilities increased in two subsectors during 2025 compared with 2024 levels, according to a recent report. Senior care bankruptcies increased by 18%, and hospital bankruptcies increased by 60%. Bankruptcy filings declined in other major health care subsectors, including clinics and physician practices, medical equipment and supplies, pharmaceuticals, and an “other” category.
The number of bankruptcy filings by sector was as follows:
Senior care: 13 filings in 2025, up from 11 in 2024. Between 2019 and 2025, 23.9% of all health care bankruptcies occurred in this sector
