High Glucose Levels At Age 50 To 60 Raises Alzheimer’s Risk By 14.5%
People with elevated blood glucose levels between ages 51 and 60 have a 14.5% higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in the future. Normal blood glucose levels are between 70 mg/dl to 140 mg/dl for women and 70 mg/dl to 100 mg/dl for men. High blood glucose, hyperglycemia, is diagnosed at 160 mg/dl. Among this age group the risk of Alzheimer’s rose 14.5% with each 15 mg/dL increase in blood glucose. The data was gathered as part of the ongoing longitudinal Framingham Heart Study.
