First Inpatient Unit For Children With Autism Opens In Connecticut
On November 4, 2015, the Connecticut Hospital for Special Care (HSC) opened the state’s first inpatient unit for children ages 10 to 21 who are diagnosed with autism. The unit will provide interdisciplinary treatment to meet the complex needs of children who need intensive treatment for aggression, self-injury, or severely impaired functioning that threatens their or others’ safety in the community. Previously children with autism needing inpatient care traveled out-of-state because no in-state hospitals had capacity. The HSC unit is one of only 10 such specialized hospital units in the United States.
