Illinois To Close General I/DD Residential Units At Choate Mental Health & Developmental Center

The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) announced plans to significantly reduce operations and staffing at the Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center in Anna, Illinois. The facility's general residential units for people with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) will close by September 30, 2026. IDHS also plans to lay off about half of the center's more than 500 employees.

By March 2027, the facility's 75 civil mental health beds will be phased out. IDHS plans to add civil mental health capacity at Madden Mental Health Center in Chicago, stating that demand for civil mental health services . . .
