In 2021 States Spent $8 Billion To Incarcerate 193,000 People For Parole Violations & Revocations
States paid $8 billion in 2021 to reincarcerate 193,000 people on parole or probation for supervision violations and revocations, based on data from 41 states. In general, the aggregate cost of reincarceration varied with the size of the population in each state. Higher population states generally had more parole or probation revocations than lower population states.
However, in some states the per-population cost of reincarceration for supervision violations was higher than $40 per resident. The 10 states with the highest per-resident cost of reincarceration in 2021 were:
