Kansas State Supreme Court Orders Legislature To Correct School Funding Disparities

On March 7, 2014, the Kansas State Supreme Court ordered the state legislature to correct school funding disparities between school districts by July 1, 2014. Disparities between rich and poor school districts created by the current school funding formula violate the state’s Constitution. State education officials estimate that $129 million is needed. On April 14, 2014, the legislature sent a funding measure, House Bill (HB 2506), appropriating additional school funding to Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, who supports the measure. As of April 18, HB 2506 had not been signed into law.
