On March 26, 2019, the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS), Department for Medicaid Services (DMS) announced plans to file a Medicaid State Plan Amendment (SPA) to add coverage of methadone. CHFS intends to file the SPA by May 1, 2019. The changes would become effective on July 1, 2019. Currently, DMS covers buprenorphine and Vivitrol. After the SPA goes into effect, any Medicaid beneficiary with a diagnosis of opioid use disorder will be able to access medication assisted treatment (MAT) via buprenorphine, Vivitrol, or methadone.
