The Kidney Project Developing An Artificial Kidney Eliminating The Need For Dialysis
On November 7, 2019, The Kidney Project announced that its implantable bio-artificial kidney hit a key milestone. A prototype kidney bioreactor containing functional human kidney cells was successfully implanted into pigs and functioned without triggering an immune reaction or blood clots in the animals. The goal of The Kidney Project is to create a small, surgically implanted, and free-standing bioartificial kidney to treat end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and eliminate the need for dialysis.
