Lawsuit Claims New Mexico Intentionally Denied SNAP Benefits, In Violation Of 20-Year-Old Consent Decree

The New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty filed a complaint in federal court asserting that the New Mexico Human Services Department (HSD) intentionally and improperly denied benefits to people who applied for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The actions of HSD are allegedly  in violation of the terms of a 1990 consent decree regarding rules and timely application processing for the SNAP food stamp program. The Center asked the court to find HSD in contempt of the consent decree and to appoint an independent monitor to oversee HSD’s application procedures and processing.
