Los Angeles County Agrees To Provide Discharge Services For All Offenders With Cognitive Conditions

On December 6, 2018, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) and the County amended a settlement agreement in which the LASD and the County agreed to provide all newly discharged offenders with mental illness or dementia with discharge services that include a release plan, a 14-day supply of medication and connections to services. Previously, discharged services were provided to offenders with mental illness jailed for more than seven days. Services were not provided to offenders jailed for shorter periods or to offenders with other behavioral health problems, such as dementia.
