Massachusetts Audit Identifies $193 Million In Improper Medicaid Payments Over Five Years For Behavioral Health

Between July 2010 and June 2015, the Massachusetts Medicaid program (MassHealth) paid $93 million in improper payments and another $100 million in questionable payments for behavioral health services that should have been paid by the Massachusetts Behavior Health Partnership (MBHP). During the five-year period, MassHealth paid MBHP a capitated monthly rate to manage the coordination of care for mental health services for MassHealth members. The potential improper payments of $193 million represent 7.4% of the approximately $2.6 billion MassHealth paid MBHP.
