Median annual health care costs rose by 300% for Medicare beneficiaries in the year after a fall requiring ambulance transport. In the year before the fall, median baseline costs were $8,642. During the 12 months following the fall, median annual costs were $26,143. In a review of post-fall costs for nearly 2,500 Medicare beneficiaries, the median cost for acute care was $1,957, and median post-acute costs were $20,560. About 75% of those who fell and needed ambulance transport had increased costs. The median cost increase was $12,682.
