Medicaid Expansion Associated With 9.7% Drop In Opioid-Related Hospitalization
The 2014 Affordable Care Act (ACA) Medicaid expansions were associated with a 9.74% reduction in the rate of opioid-related hospitalizations. States that expanded Medicaid after 2014 experienced smaller increases in hospitalizations than states that did not expand Medicaid. There was no change in opioid-related emergency department visits that could be linked to Medicaid expansion. Medicaid expansions prior to 2014 showed no association with the opioid-related inpatient rate.
