Medicaid Total Spending On HCBS Continues To Exceed Total Spending On Institutional LTSS
Medicaid efforts to rebalance spending on long-term services and supports (LTSS) by increasing the use of home- and community-based services (HCBS) and decreasing the use of institutional care have continued to progress. According to data for 2021, which is the most recent year for which complete data is available, spending on Medicaid HCBS accounted for 63.2% of the total $181.9 billion in LTSS spending in 2021, up from 60.9% of the $176.5 billion in 2020.
