Medicare Advantage Plans Testing Hospice Coverage Through Value-Based Insurance Design Model
Starting January 1, 2021, nine Medicare Advantage Organizations began offering hospice benefits. The plans are participating in the Medicare Advantage Value-Based Insurance Design (VBID) Model demonstration and applied to participate in the four-year Hospice Benefit Component of the demonstration. Through this demonstration, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) seeks to learn whether covering hospice services within the Part A benefits package for Medicare Advantage results in additional innovation, enables a more seamless care continuum, and improves quality and timely access to palliative and hospice care.
