Medicare & Medicaid Enrollees In Many High-Need Areas May Lack Access To Medications For Opioid Use Disorder
In 2022, 19% (about 600 counties) of U.S. counties did not have a provider for medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD), despite the fact that more than 100 of those counties were in high need of MOUD services, according to an analysis by the U.S. Office of Inspector General (OIG). Another 21% (660 counties) had disproportionately fewer MOUD provider in comparison to other counties of a similar population size. The largest number of these counties without a MOUD provider are located in the Midwest U.S.
