Medicare Overpayment Rate For Chronic Care Management Services At About 0.6%

Medicare overpaid physicians and outpatient facility chronic care management (CCM) services by 0.6% during 2015 and 2016. During that period of time, Medicare paid $103.5 million for more than 3.3 million physician and outpatient facility claims for CCM services. An audit of CCM claims flagged 20,165 claims valued at $640,452 as over payments because they did not meet the CCM billing guidelines. For the 20,165 claims flagged as overpayments, beneficiaries were overcharged a total of up to $173,495 in cost sharing.
