MedPAC Recommends Medicare Redesign Upcoming MIPS

In its most recent report to Congress, the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) recommended that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) redesign the Medicare Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), which goes live in 2019. MedPAC believes that MIPS, as presently designed, “is unlikely to help beneficiaries choose clinicians, help clinicians change practice patterns toward value, or help Medicare reward based on value.” Currently, MIPS has minimal standards. About 40% of clinical professionals are exempt from MIPS.
