Methamphetamine Overdose Deaths Up 50-Fold From 1999 To 2021, Almost Half Involved Heroin Or Fentanyl

The number of methamphetamine deaths in the U.S. has increased exponentially in recent years. From 1999-2021, there were a total of 135,433 methamphetamine-related deaths, of which almost half (42.8%) also involved heroin or fentanyl. This represents a 50-fold increase in just a few years (545 deaths in 1999 to 32,353 deaths in 2021).

The age-adjusted mortality rate increased by more than 20% for each year between 1999 and 2021, as follows:
