More Medicaid Beneficiaries With LTSS Needs Accessed HCBS Than Institutional Care In 2021
The percentage of Medicaid beneficiaries using home- and community-based services (HCBS) increased between 2019 and 2021, from 2.4% to 2.6%. The percentage of those using institutional long-term services and supports (LTSS) decreased from 1.9% in 2019 to 1.5% in 2021. The trends were reported in a recent analysis by the Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC).
In 2019, of the more than 91.5 million Medicaid beneficiaries:
2.2 million used HCBS, representing about 2.4% of all Medicaid beneficiaries.
