Nearly 1 In 10 U.S. Children Have Been Diagnosed With A Developmental Disability
Among 3- to 17-year-olds in the U.S., almost 8.6% have ever been diagnosed with a developmental disability. This is an increase from 7.4% in 2019. The prevalence of intellectual disability increased with age, from 1.4% for children aged 3 to 7 years to 2.35% for children aged 13 to 17 years.Â
Developmental disability diagnoses are far more common among boys than girls. More than 1 in 10 boys (11%) had an intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, or any other developmental delay in 2021, compared to just 5% of girls.Â
