About 10% of hospitals in the United States earned a five-star overall rating on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website after CMS updated its rating methodology. This compares to about 2% under the previous methodology. Four key enhancements were madeĀ to the Overall Star Rating methodology for the DecemberĀ 2017 ratings, which include:

ForĀ latent variable models, adaptive quadrature was evaluated, rather thanĀ non-adaptive quadrature.
Hospital summary scores are not winsorized, meaning that extremely good scores and extremely bad scores were not set to the lower limits of the old methodology.
