Nebraska Launches Medicaid Registration Program For Prison & Jail Inmates Nearing Release
On September 14, 2023, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) launched a Medicaid registration program for inmates within 60 days of release from state custody. The registration services can be provided in-person, telephone, or video conference. Inmates who seek Medicaid coverage must still meet income, age, and disability requirements.
For this program, the NDCS is partnering with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (NDHHS), which oversees the Medicaid program. Inmates can opt out of applying for Nebraska Medicaid during reentry preparation. Those who decline are allowed to apply for Medicaid at a future date.
