Nebraska Medicaid To Cover IMD Services For Serious Mental Illness

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) approved a Nebraska Medicaid demonstration amendment allowing the state to receive federal Medicaid reimbursement for short-term treatment in institutions for mental diseases (IMDs) for beneficiaries ages 21 to 64 with serious mental illness (SMI) or serious emotional disturbance (SED). CMS approved the amendment on August 14, 2026, and the demonstration will remain in effect through June 30, 2030. Nebraska cannot begin claiming federal reimbursement for these IMD services until CMS approves the state’s SMI/SED Implementation Plan and financing plan.
