New Dietary Guidelines Update Federal Nutrition Policy

The federal government released new Dietary Guidelines on January 7, 2026. The updated guidelines specify daily consumption recommendations for an adult consuming a diet of 2,000 calories, however because a 2,000-calorie diet is not appropriate for all individuals, daily serving goals may need to be adjusted for different calorie needs, as recommended by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

For an adult consuming a diet of 2,000 calories, daily consumption should include the following components, according to the updated Guidelines:

Protein target: three to four servings per day.

Vegetables: three servings per day.
