New York City Opens First 5 Of 90 Planned New Homeless Shelters
In late May 2017, New York City opened the first five of 90 planned new homeless shelters in a new system to locate homeless families closer to their support networks, such as schools, churches, and communities. The goal is to reduce by 45% the number of hotels and cluster apartments rented by the city used to temporarily house the homeless over the next five years. The city intends to distribute shelters equitably in all five boroughs.
