New York Implements ‘AI Companion’ Law, Requires User Safeguards
Effective November 5, 2025, entities that provide artificial intelligence (AI) applications that function as a “companion” to New Yorkers must implement new safeguards and safety measures for users. The AI companions must also include protocols to provide users with resources to seek assistance for mental health crises. The details were highlighted in a published open letter from Gov. Kathy Hochul summarizing safeguards and penalties addressing AI companions designed to simulate human relationships such as friendships or romantic partnerships.
