NIST Recommends EHR Vendors Move From Billing Focus To Clinical Workflow Focus To Improve System Usability
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has recommended that electronic health record (EHR) vendors improve the usability of their systems by shifting the focus away from billing functions and toward supporting outpatient clinical workflows. By focusing on integrating the EHR into clinical workflows, the system will support the flow of patients, clinical tasks, and documentation needed to manage patient care. An EHR system integrated into the clinical workflow will also lessen the development of workarounds, such as “copy and paste,” used to complete clinical tasks in ways other than intended by the system designers.
