Non-Profit Hospitals Estimate Their Community Benefit Tops $68 Billion Per Year

Tax-exempt, non-profit safety net hospitals participating in the 340B drug savings program reported providing $67.9 billion in community benefit in 2019, which is the most recent tax year for which comprehensive information is available from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The sum provided in community benefit represented 13.3% of the hospital’s aggregate expenses. Of the $67.9 billion, $55.9 billion was for financial assistance and direct benefits to the community related to community health.
