Non-Profit Hospitals With High Financial Performance Provide Disproportionately Low Levels Of Charity Care
In 2017, non-profit hospitals in the United States with high financial performance provided disproportionately low levels of charity care. During this year, all U.S. non-profit hospitals generated a total of $47.9 billion overall net income, provided $9.7 billion of charity care to uninsured consumers, and provided $4.5 billion of charity care to insured consumers. Those hospitals in the top quartile for financial performance generated 100.2% of overall net income, provided 57.3% of insured charity care, and provided 54.6% of uninsured charity care.
