North Carolina To Implement Autism Insurance Coverage Mandate Effective July 1, 2016

On October 15, 2015, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory signed legislation, Senate Bill 676, to require health plans to cover diagnosis and treatment for autism. The provisions go into effect for plans issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2016. The provisions require health plans to cover applied behavior analysis (ABA) up to age 18, but allows health plans to limit ABA costs to $40,000 annually.

The provisions of North Carolina Senate Bill 676 Autism Health Insurance Coverage are as follows:

Therapeutic care (including occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy)
Psychiatric care
Psychological care
Pharmacy care
