North Carolina Medicaid Standard Managed Care Plans Offering ‘In-Lieu-Of Services’ & Value-Added Benefits To Address Social Determinants Of Health
Since going live in July 2021, North Carolina’s five Medicaid managed care standard plans have been covering a range of non-clinical services intended to help beneficiaries address health-related social needs commonly referred to as “social determinants of health” (SDOH). The services are provided as a combination of “in-lieu of services” (ILOS) and value-added benefits to address needs for housing, food, transportation, and interpersonal safety. The goal of the additional benefits beyond those in the state plan is to improve quality and member health outcomes, or reduce total costs without loss of quality.
