One-Third Of Adults Under 62 & Receiving Dialysis Switched Prematurely From An Employer Health Plan To Medicare
Approximately 33% of adults, 62 years or younger, who began dialysis for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) while insured by an employer-based group health plan (EGHP) switched to Medicare coverage prematurely. People under age 65 with ESRD are eligible for Medicare, but for the first 30 months Medicare is considered a secondary payer if the consumer is part of an EGHP. A switch from the EGHP to Medicare is considered premature if it happens before the 30-month period ends.
Consumers who were more likely to be hospitalized were also more likely to switch from their EGHP to Medicare . . .
