Opioid Treatment Program Rules Now Allow Methadone Take-Home Doses

Under new federal rules, as of October 2, 2024, Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs) are permitted to allow take-home doses of methadone for people in treatment for opioid use disorder. Unless an OTP is located in a state with more restrictive regulations, OTPs can provide methadone take home doses to last up to 28 days. Methadone is an opioid approved by the FDA in 1972 to treat opiate addiction, but it can only be prescribed by OTPs.
