Pediatric Endocrinologist Workforce Capacity Varies Widely By State
Pediatric endocrinologist capacity varies substantially across the United States. Nationally, there were an estimated 10.1 board-certified pediatric endocrinologists per 1,000 individuals younger than age 18 living with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) in 2024. Excluding the District of Columbia, state capacity ranged from 2.7 per 1,000 in Idaho to 22.5 per 1,000 in Rhode Island, with the number of pediatric endocrinologists in some states six to eight times higher than in others. The District of Columbia had the highest concentration overall, at 46.4 pediatric endocrinologists per 1,000 youth with T1D.
