Pediatric Mental Health Hospitalizations Decline For First Time Since 2009 

Between 2019 and 2022, the total number of pediatric mental health hospitalizations declined for the first time since 2009, according to a recent study. The goal of the study was to evaluate changes in the number of pediatric mental health and suicide/self-harm-related hospitalizations.  

In 2019, there were 201,932 youth mental health hospitalizations; in 2022 there were 191,710. Since 2009, the number of youth mental health hospitalizations increased for measurement periods 2009, 2012, 2016, and 2019, rising from 160,499 in 2009 to 201,932 in 2019.
