People With Autism More Likely To Report Suicide-Related Behaviors & Psychological Distress

Adults with autism have increased risks of trauma, suicide, and poor mental health compared to non-autistic adults, with one in four adults with autism attempting suicide, according to a recent analysis of survey results of 769 adults, including 424 with autism and 345 non-autistic adults.

The authors of the analysis sought to understand whether trauma and autism diagnosis were related to self-harm, suicide attempts, suicide plans, a mental health condition that affects daily life, and substance use as a means of coping.
