People With Type 1 Diabetes Spend About $2,500 Per Year On Out-Of-Pocket Health Care Costs
People with type 1 diabetes and private insurance had average annual out-of-pocket (OOP) health care spending of $2,414 per person during 2018 according to an analysis of claims for 65,192 people between ages 1 and 64 years. Annual OOP spending for insulin averaged $435, or 18% of average total OOP spending. OOP spending for diabetes-related supplies, such as insulin pumps and glucometers, averaged $490, about 20% of average total OOP spending.
