Portland, Oregon Unveils First Location Of City-Run Homeless Camp
On March 9, 2023, Portland, Oregon Mayor Ted Wheeler identified a lot in a southeast area of the city to be the location for the first large, city-run homeless encampment. Details of the lease with the current property owners is not yet finalized. California-based nonprofit Urban Alchemy was selected to oversee this new Southeast Gideon Street encampment and will likely run several other planned camps as well. The goal of the encampment is to help end street camping and provide a temporary step toward more permanent housing for the homeless population.
