Private Health Insurance Market Became Increasingly Concentrated Between 2011 & 2022
Between 2011 and 2022, the private health insurance market became increasingly concentrated such that by 2022 in 35 or more states no more than three insurers together held at least 80% of market share for individual and group employer markets. In the large group market, the number of states where 80% of market share was held by a single insurer doubled from six to 12. The median number of insurance issuers in the individual health insurance market declined by two-thirds, from 30 issuers in 2011 to 10 in 2022.
